Are you celebrating Chinese New Year (CNY) in advance?
Are you still looking for a place for CNY reunion lunch/dinner?
Or are you thinking of where to eat since you have foreseen yourself experiencing post-CNY syndrome like me?
Let me propose Gu Ma Jia (姑妈家)...
For those who are celebrating early - Gu Ma Jia is offering 10% discount until 29 January when you dine in at the restaurant.
For those who are still deciding where to have your CNY reunion lunch/dinner on 30 January (Thursday) - Gu Ma Jia has CNY 2014 Set Menu Promotions with four timings to choose from: 12.00 pm – 2.00 pm, 2.15pm – 4.15pm, 6.00 pm – 7.45 pm, and 8.00pm – 9.45 pm.
The restaurant will be closed on 31 January (Friday) and 1 February (Saturday) but operations will resume on 2 February (Sunday) - a great day to makan before starting work on Monday, if you have to work on Monday. Check out the restaurant's menu.
(*FYI: There is no GST and no service charge at Gu Ma Jia.)
As for me, I'm planning to pay a visit to the restaurant again post-CNY! Lemme share some of the unforgettable food I had previously.
Gu Ma Jia is famously known for its signature dish - Assam Fish Head ($28). Many bloggers have praised the delicacy and even celebrities have visited the restaurant to have a taste of this delicious dish. YES! I bet you can finish two bowls of rice with just the gravy. The gravy wins hands down by having the balance of 4S. It was sweet, spicy, savory and sour.
The sweetness of the gravy was very "fishy"... in a good way! I later found out that the natural sweetness of the gravy came from the fish! The fish was cooked in the gravy to perfection with its meat still moist and tender. (FYI: Many places steam the fish head and then pour the gravy over it.) *Apologies for the absence of photograph.
Some people travel all the way here just for its Assam Fish Head. But Gu Ma Jia offers many other good delicious dishes.
You can see how steaming hot these Kyoto Pork Ribs ($20) were! I was so fascinated that I didn't had time to react and take a snap of what happened. When this dish was served, the pork ribs were covered and wrapped with aluminium foil, placed on a hot plate. The fascinating thing was - it was on fire! Wow... they actually had sprinkled some rose wine over it then lit it up so that the fragrance of the rose wine will be infused in the pork ribs.
Cheers for the dual effect, making the dish tasty with visual impact! See.. they could do that in the kitchen but to do it in front of customers... Besides visually pleasing, it attracts attention of other tables. Well, I think one or two tables ordered this after they saw my dish on fire. Haha...
I loved everything about this dish to the max. The pork ribs were really tender, moist and soft. There were not much fats and the cuts were really generous. What perfected the dish was the tasty and savory sauce. It is a dish that will make you order another bowl of rice!
I can't help but to order Cereal Sotong with Curry Leaves ($16/$24/$30) because I'm a fan of cereal and a seafood lover. How good was it? I could finish the $16 portion (photo above) just on my own!! The batter was very thin and crisp. The best thing was that it was not oily. Also, the batter does not start peeling off from the sotong which shows how well the batter was done.
Sotong was not overcooked at all and if you are a sotong fan, you would know that sotong itself does not have too much flavour. Hence, you might have realized that sotong needs many other condiments or spices to bring out its flavour. In this dish, the restaurant uses curry leaves and chilli padi. Very very well-done dish. We even finished the cereal!
I was surprised by the size of the prawns when Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk ($20/$30/$38) was served. The prawns were really big, fresh, juicy, sweet, and springy. They were so well-fried and so evenly covered in the tastily irresistible savory salted egg yolk sauce that I ate the prawns with the shells. My only regret was that I did not have a bottomless pit to eat more!
I believe many have tried Spinach with Assorted Eggs in many Chinese restaurants but Gu Ma Jia offers Spinach Soup with Assorted Eggs ($12/$20). Yes, you read correctly. It's a soup-based dish. Unlike the usual vegetable dish that is covered with the thick sauce of the assorted eggs. This tasted healthily yummilicious. The eggy taste of century eggs, salted egg yolks and chicken eggs were less prominent. The soup was light and sweet with the fragrance of the spinach. It was great that I ordered this because it kind of cleanse our palates after all those strong flavoured dishes.
For those who are making plans for a visit, please do call in advance to reserve a table!

Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck Restaurant (Paragon)
Chinese New Year is around the corner. An occasion for family to get together and feast! Have you decided what to have for reunion dinner? For those who have a budget of more than $80 per pax, you get to enjoy a feast of 山珍海味 at Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck Restaurant (Paragon). View the CNY 2014 menu here!
Alternatively, if you want to keep your budget within the wallet-friendly category, visit the restaurant for its Peking Duck and dim sum on days that do not fall within the CNY dining days.
If you wish to enjoy the renowned Peking Duck that placed Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck Restaurant at 49th in Asia's 50 Best Restaurants in 2013, it is highly recommended to call and reserve a table and the Peking Duck about 3 days in advance.
I am not afraid to hide my kiasu-ism. If I am bringing my family to a restaurant for CNY dinner, I would do some tasting sessions to sample the restaurant's standard and check out the restaurant's ambiance. And I did. Now, let's feast and eat!
While I was deciding what to order, I was munching away these Cashew Nuts Glazed with Honey and Sesame (self-made name). Gosh.. I'm not a nutty fan and I hardly eat the snacks offered at Chinese restaurants but these were so good that it slowed down my mental processes to decide what to order.
Winter Melon Soup with Crabmeat and Conpoy ($10/pax) was so rich and flavorful! The natural sweetness from winter melon and crabmeat was so addictive. I just kept drinking it.
And look at the generous conpoy (dried scallop)! No wonder the soup was so tasty. Seriously, we just bottoms up the soup.
Well, I was given the dim sum order sheet. I just find dim sum irresistible and I had to order some!
(Note: There were some discrepancies between the prices stated on the dim sum order sheet and the actual prices. Prices for some dishes had increased.)
Steamed Rice Roll with Prawns ($6) was served with big chunky juicylicious prawns. I thought that the rice roll could be thinner though...
One of the usual favorites would be Siew Mai ($5). It was normal and decent. I like that the pork inside was still moist and sweet but there was no wow factor.
Another usual favourite would be Har Gau ($5) but it was... complicated. Hahahaa.. Hear me out. It was good that the skin did not stick to the paper and did not tear and break open when I picked it up. The prawn inside was juicy and chunky. But! I found the skin too floury and thick.
Deep Fried Beancurd Skin Roll with Prawns ($5) was over-fried. I like that the skin was fried to crisp but over-frying them made the beancurd skin loses its flavor. -_- That being said, the prawns were still moist and springy inside. The prawns saved the dish.
Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling ($5) was fried to its optimal crunchiness on the outside and the prawns were kept juicy and moist on the inside. Dipping it into the salad sauce provided on the side clears some of its greasiness. (^o^)
Steamed Custard Buns ($4.50) was good but I've had better ones. The bun was not fluffy enough and the custard was not tasty enough. It is comparable to the ones at Cryst*l J*de but I still prefer the ones at Bosses Restaurant (Vivocity)...
Now comes the main highlight! The Peking Duck ($68)!! The chef was very swift and quick in cutting the thin crust of skin and placing the slices onto the plate. The chef would then cut some of the meat from various parts of the duck and place them neatly on the plates (shown below). I like the cute duck plates.
How to eat?
1. Eat the skin first! Dip the skin in sugar and sweet bean sauce and enjoy its crispiness.
2. Start the spreading and wrapping. Spread sweet bean sauce and sprinkle some sugar on the steamed flour crepe.
3. Place spring onions and cucumbers (as many as you want) onto the steamed flour crepe.
4. Top up with the tenderlicious duck meat, how much you like, onto the steamed flour crepe.
5. Wrap it up and make sure it could still fit your mouth! Hahahaaa...
You can decide what to do with the rest of the duck (additional charges applied). Stir-fry duck with vegetables, Duck soup, Fried Rice with Duck meat, E-fu noodles with Duck meat and etc.
My recommendation: E-fu Noodles with Duck Meat ($10). Verrrrrrry good! I was surprised to find mui choy (sweet preserved vegetables) in it. After stir-frying the duck meat with mui choy, it enhances the flavor of the duck meat and brings out its sweetness. The noodles then absorbed all the fragrances and essences of the duck meat and mui choy. Hou hou sek (delicious in Cantonese)!!
Let me apologise for the lack for photos on the wraps and noodles because my hands were full! I was so occupied with prepping my Peking Duck wraps and slurping the noodles that I forgot to snap pictures. Nonetheless, let me assure you, the Peking Duck is really worth the money, the trip and the wait (to book in advance). It is also a good place to consider for CNY!

Kim Gary Plus Hong Kong Restaurant (ION Orchard)
It has been a very long time since I last visited Kim Gary. I noticed that it has opened a new branch at ION Orchard and it is called - Kim Gary Plus.
Maybe it was because I was out of touch with Hong Kong cafes, did Kim Gary used to have so many items on its menu??? There were too many so I couldn't photograph the menu page by page for you. The menu was so extensive that I took quite a while to decide what to have.
Well, as a full-fledged carnivore, the above promo caught my attention!
*rawrssss*
(Note: Click on image to enlarge.)
The sets are served with choice of soup (borsh or cream soup) and a beverage.
I was happy to see that my Cream Soup was filled to the brim! Haha.. Though it was not as hot as I wanted, it was warm enough to my standard. I like that the soup was not diluted but I thought that they could've added another pinch of salt to enhance the tastiness.
What a pretty presentation of a Garlic Bread in a basket~~ It was soft and fluffy!
My main highlight: Combo Hot Plate Set ($19.50) consists of grilled pork chop, fish fillet and chicken chop. Wow, it was sizzling hot! The choices of sauces are: white sauce, red sauce, garlic sauce or black pepper. And my choice was black pepper~
So how much do I love meat? I finished all of what was served! LOL.. The pork was tender, fish was not overcooked, and the chicken was moist. My only tiny complaint is the corn. It was not sweet lor. I was a bit disappointed... But actually, other than my three pieces of meat, the sides don't matter to me.
Fried Nissin Noodles with Chicken and Fried Egg ($9.90) - at Kim Gary, don't be embarrassed to order instant noodles that cost almost $10. Because, Kim Gary made the instant noodles taste like they are worth $10. Wahahahaa.. just my personal opinion though. Anyway, it was really very nice. Not only it was tasty, full of flavour, it was very springy in texture because the very fact that it is instant noodles!
Verdict: What to do? If I need a quick fix for my craving for big portion of food at an affordable price in town (or specifically at ION), I guess Kim Gary Plus would be one of my top choices!

Some's - A Roast's Culture
If you happen to be in the vicinity of Novena, what makan places will you think of? Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice - crowded. The Big Bird - overrated. I was looking for somewhere that is not as crowded, has good food, must be of good value, errm.. better if there's air-con! ... and ... I found one!
Some's - A Roast's Culture offers lunch value meal of roast delights at $6 nett! The value meal comprises of your choice of one meat, two sides (poached cabbage and achar), soup and rice/noodles. If you're a carnivore like me, you can choose to have more meat choices - two meat ($7), three meat ($8) or four meat ($10).
Check out the menu! (Note: Click on image to enlarge.)
What goes well with roast delights? Beer! (personal opinion) If it's not because I had to go back to work after that, I would like to have some beer to go with my fragrant roast meat though..
Braised Roast Duck ($6.50) is a combo on its own. It means that you cannot add-on other meat choices. According to the boss, he only prepares 12 servings of this dish every day! The duck is slow-cooked so it was really soft and tender. Every bite was filled with strong aroma of spices with added tastiness of Some's traditional sauce. Good but with some down parts. The lotus roots were quite hard and raw while the yam was quite bland. Also, though at a glance, the portion looks quite generous, but there were too many bone chunks here and there. It would had been better if more lean meat and flesh were given.
Crispy Pork + Roast Duck Combo ($7) - the above picture shows two sets of the same combo. Don't be mistaken! hahahaha.. The achar was really really good. It was very crunchy and the strong sweet-sour flavour was just so appetising! On another hand, the poached cabbage was... not very tasty. Would the word "awful" be too harsh?
Main star was Crispy Pork! O.M.G. the crispiness is 10/10. My colleagues could hear the crunching sounds when I was eating it. However, remember to be realistic. The crispiness decreases when left too long. So, be sure to eat the Crispy Pork first if you order this!
Roast Duck was too dry and really really tasteless. It does not have the roast fragrance at all. I was so disappointed because it looked good. (-_-) Fortunately, there was some tangy home-made sauce at the side to go with the duck.
The above picture shows (top) Tender Char Siew + Simply Chicken Combo ($7) and (bottom) Signature Ribs + Tender Char Siew Combo ($7).
Simply Chicken was what its name says - simply chicken.. nothing special. I had high expectations of the Signature Ribs 'cos its supposed to be a signature dish right?! However, sadly, it fell short of my expectations. I thought that it was too salty and the thick sauce was overpowering and upping the saltiness to the max. No doubt the ribs itself was really tender and soft but the overdosing of sodium really spoilt the dish.
The contender that outshone the signature dish was Tender Char Siew. As its name suggested, it was really tender and I think they used lean meat only. The
char siew was well-marinated and roasted to perfection.
Hence, the perfect combo to choose when I visit next time would be Crispy Pork + Tender Char Siew. (^O^)
OH! Remember you can choose either rice or noodles? See below.
We all know that lu zhi (gravy from braised meat) goes well with rice. But if you want plain rice, please inform them upon ordering. They don't ask if you want gravy or not.
I didn't not try the noodles but I gathered that the noodles was not bad. Can try!
Woooh~ Whatever chilli you want, they have it!
Service: I think the place is run by a family. They were really friendly and smiling all the time. The boss was patiently explaining the menu to me when I was there the first time. He was very honest in recommending what was nice and popular (Crispy Pork) and what was normal (shall not mention). Hahahaa~
Ambience: Though the place is air-conditioned, the door was left open so it was only rather cooling. But that was good enough. If the door was closed and we are eating in a fully air-conditioned place, I think I'll be tabao-ing the roast meat smell back to office. The place is spacious and they have tables for groups of four and even to a big group of ten!
Value: Worth! Maybe I should try the $10 (four meat choices) combo next time. Heehee.. (^___^)
Verdict: Yes I will be back again! Food was served fast and considering the quality and quantity, I think my $7 was very well-spent! Moreover, it's not easy to find a place that is not packed during lunch time, air-conditioned and serves good food.

Bosses Restaurant (黑社会)
Bosses Restaurant (黑社会) offers 30% discount off for dim sum items and desserts, from Monday to Saturday, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.. I've long heard about the unconventional dim sum items Bosses offers.. And it was about time to cancel Bosses from my to-eat list and report to the restaurant right away~
I was presented with a thick menu, but because I was there targeting the 30% off, so I only focused on their dim sum and dessert menu!
Please note that the prices I stated below are after 30% off.
Fried Fish Skin ($3.80) was sneakily placed on my table as a snack.. I thought most dim sum restaurants serve peanuts? Oh well.. though I'm not a fan of fried fish skin.. I applaud the novel idea.. However, I did saw another table having peanuts.. Perhaps they asked for peanuts instead.. Hence, if you do not want to pay for the snack, please make note to the staff when they place it on your table..
Superior Lobster Dumpling ($6.65) was ... unbelievably normal.. It was like Har Gau (Prawn Dumpling) with three prawns.. I was surprised to see the three dumplings in different colours.. However, it turned out that it was just coloring.. All tasted the same.. Haizzz.. I sighed when I picked one up.. the skin was glued to the paper and the skin was detaching from the big ball of lobster.. (-_-)
Crispy Sesame Mango Prawn Salad Roll ($4.90) deserved more sighs from me.. The skin was too thick with too much sesame.. There were too little mango and I could barely taste the prawn as they were too bland.. *cries for help*
Shredded Duck & Mui Choy in XO Sauce Rice Roll ($5.46) was yummilicious! I could finish two plates of this.. really.. Shredded duck and mui choy already sounds yummy.. With the savoury XO sauce over the rice roll.. Oooh.. Hou hou sek! (Delicious in Cantonese)
Signature Custard Lava Bun ($4.20) was very impressive! Yes.. like most people who had reviewed on Bosses' custard lava bum.. The custard really overflows! See pic below!
As if there's soup inside right?? (^O^)
Famous Chilli Crab Tart ($5.95) was kinda deceiving.. Shreds of crab meat and dices of prawns stir-fried in chilli crab sauce then placed in a tart..
What you imagine was what it tasted like.. *cries again*
Experience: It was like a roller-coaster ride.. Among those dim sum items that I've ordered, a few were nice and some that did not make the mark.. Judging from the marketing point that Bosses offers dim sum that are different from usual, I like that it serves many items that most dim sum restaurants don't.. However, it still lacks a bit in the tastiness..
Ambience: It's a modern dim sum restaurant.. Unlike most Chinese restaurants, Bosses uses the colour, BLACK, boldly throughout the exterior and interior of the restaurant, including the furnishing..
Service: The staff was polite and prompt.. I know there were a few reviews on how bad their service were.. Probably because I was there at 3.30pm.. The restaurant was not crowded.. So my orders came fast and the staff were pretty attentive to my needs.. Oh! They would check and refill tea and hot water for the teapot for me.. That was nice~ (^O^) Although I was puzzled why the staff, who had ushered me in, had asked for my name.. I was like thinking "Why would you want to know? Would you even remember me?" LOL..
Verdict: Hmmm.. I might be back to try other unconventional dim sum items.. But I'll still be targeting the 30% off timeslot! Haha.. I don't think that the delicious index of the dim sum items was worth paying for in full.. My total spending for the above 5 dim sum items, plus tea ($2 per pax), plus the snack ($3.80) and towel ($0.30 per pax) was $41.86 (inclusive of GST and service charge) after 30% discount.

Yong Xiang Xing Yong Tau Foo (永祥兴豆腐)
how come the queue is always there??

though the queue was reeeeaaalllly long.. i think i queued for about 15 to 20 minutes.. which was not that bad.. how to order:
Uncle: how many bowls?
Me: 2
Uncle: $8. Sit where?
Me: There.
Uncle: Okay. Go sit.
the uncle was right behind me as i walked to my table.. two bowls of hot and fragrant yong tau foo were served..

due to inflation and whatever nots.. the price has increased to $4 per bowl.. compared to $3 in 2011..
however, there are 10 pieces of yong tau foo.. since everything were done at the stall (on the spot?).. everything just taste so good..
it is a simple dish.. yet so difficult to find a good one.. but Yong Xiang Xing probably serves the best yong tau foo..
thumbs up up up!

Tim Ho Wan

Brief info: Hong Kong's Tim Ho Wan is a recipient of a star from the Michelin Guide in 2009.
Please note that the SMS queue number system has not kick start yet.

What do Singaporeans splurge on? FOOD!
What do Singaporeans queue for? FOOD!

Pork Congee ($4.20) was pretty average.. Besides century egg, there was also salted egg.. and minimal minced meat.. hahahaha.. I still prefer Imperial's congee though.. Tim Ho Wan's congee don't have the HK's hou hou mei (好好味, tasty/savoury).. a bit disappointed..

I kept hearing an auntie asking the staff if one table can only order 3 BBQ Pork Buns ($4.50).. To clarify this once and for all.. currently.. the BBQ Pork Buns are limited to ONE ORDER (3 buns, what you see above) PER PAX.. means if you are in a table of 4.. you can make 4 orders = 12 buns..

The BBQ Pork Buns lived up to its name of being one of the four heavenly kings.. because.. it was really heavenly!! because it was baked, it was mildly crisp on the outside and when you bite it.. omg.. the fragrant and diced char siew just oozed out! No wonder I heard that some auntie came to tabao 50 of these..

Carrot Cake ($4.50) was different from what I usually had at other Chinese restaurants in Singapore.. you can distinctively chew on slices of radish with every bite you take.. what makes it still far from perfect would be the lack of Chinese sausage (腊肠).. there were only a few bits and pieces here and there.. if there were more, the carrot cake would have been more tasty..

Spring Roll with Egg White ($4.20) was unexpectedly good! it's not an easily-done dish k.. coz egg white would ooze out oil and water and the moisture would make the outer skin soggy.. BUT! it was still very crispy! next shocking factor was that - the egg white does not taste like egg white! I wonder what they put inside.. soda powder? haha I dunno.. there was a pleasant surprise though.. I did not expect that there would be some diced prawns inside.. haha.. adds another star to this dish..

Tonic Medlar & Osmanthus Petal Cake (Cold) ($3.50) introduced me to a totally new roller-coaster food experience.. there was a slight bitter Chinese herbal taste.. but at the same time.. there was a tinge of sweetness and fragrance from the osmanthus petals.. by right.. these are the tastes I would find in a Chinese hot dessert.. but when all these were put together in a cold dish i.e. jelly.. oh gosh.. I don't know why.. it just tasted weird but nice at the same time.. am I confusing you? wahahahaa~~

Deep-fried Beancurd Skin Roll with Shrimp ($5.50) was average.. there was no surprise.. it's similar to most Chinese restaurants. . . . . . okie next!

Steamed Beancurd Skin Roll with Pork & Shrimp ($4) was much nicer than the deep-fried version.. maybe because of the tasty saltish sauce.. so the steamed version has more layers of tastes than the deep-fried ones.. it was also more savoury and juicy.. hou sek! (delicious!)

In-house Special Chilli Sauce (FOC) was not spicy.. it was tasty! the chilli was mixed with beans so it was really special..

Prawn Dumplings (Har Gau) ($5.50) was very juicy and filled with prawnssssss.. the skin doesn't dry up and get stuck onto the paper like what happens in most Chinese restaurants.. this was really good.. thumbs up up up!

Pork Dumpling with Shrimp (Siew Mai) ($5) was a little disappointing.. it was not even half as nice as Har Gau.. saddens.. it was bland and plain dull..

Steamed Egg Cake ($3.80) was FLUFFY!!! it was sweet, light and fluffy.. I admit that it was a little overpriced for a mah lai gou but it was really nice leh..

Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp ($5.50) was reeeeeeeeaalllly awful.. omg.. it was not up to a dim sum restaurant's standard.. the skin was too thick and there were too few prawns.. even if there were.. they must be baby prawns.. I know the Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver is one of the Big 4 Heavenly Kings.. but I don't eat liver.. so I had to pass on that.. -_-

hahahaaa.. I got a free tee~~ hahahaha.. shhh shhh.. actually I didn't queue that long.. hahahahaaa..
Today was Tim Ho Wan's official opening.. Chef Mak Kwai Pui was there and smiling all the way.. taking pictures.. so cute.. while the people were queuing all the way.. haha..
