Saltwater Cafe (Changi Village Hotel)

A decent lunch buffet spread of tasty Asian dishes for just $36++.
Who's in for it? I AM!

Just that there's a little travelling to do, unless you stay near Changi Village Hotel where you can find the hidden gem - Saltwater Cafe.

See a familiar face in the picture above?
Saltwater Cafe is headed by a celebrity chef who had appeared on many television shows in Singapore - Chef William Soh.

The buffet area is rather small but there's a Chinese saying that goes 麻雀虽小,五脏俱全, which roughly means.. Though it is as small as a sparrow, it possesses everything. Well, at least most of the usual suspects of an Asian buffet could be found here.

I photographed about 90% of what was available during lunch buffet.

Let's feast!

Visit the decent salad bar for healthier moments in between the carnivorous meal.

I quite like the cold dishes section. The tofu salad and mango chicken surprised me. The taste was so refreshing and really appetizing. Good way to start my buffet~

Though I was a little disappointed that there were no sashimi, but there were the usual prawns and scallops and some limited choices of sushi.

Dessertssss! Wasn't there a saying that says - desserts go to a different stomach? Hahahahaa~~

Do it yourself! Make your own lor mee and prawn noodles~~ add as many ingredients you want. They are all for you to eat.

You can make yourself some kueh pie-ti as well.

Toss and turn and mix up a good rojak for yourself! I like mine with more you tiao and sweet sauce. Extra peanuts for the crunchiness!!

The above picture was not photoshopped! The chef just happened to stand behind the roasted chicken. Hahahaa~~ There's char siew, roast pork, roasted chicken and duck! I like the char siew as it was tender and moist. The sauce was sweet and thickened just right.

The chef at this live station was not as friendly as I thought so I only took this photo. The roti prata was thin and errrr.. didn't tasted like roti prata. It tasted like carrot cake! LOL..

There were different curry to choose from, such as chicken, fish and mutton curry, to go with the prata or briyani.

The live station for satay (chicken, pork, mutton & beef) is at the outdoor area.

Also at the outdoor area, you can make your own teh tarik. No kidding, you can "pull" your tea from one tin container to another until it's very foamy. (^O^)

I found something! Kachang puteh corner! Many people just passed by this as it was lower than our eye level and all the containers weren't open. So, keep your eyes open!

The following would be what many people had described as hawker centre dishes:

Sambal prawns: very succulent and tasty. I kept refilling my plates with these.

Black pepper sliced beef: the texture was just right. It was not too tenderized. The black pepper sauce was not too overpowering. I got no complain about this standard tze char dish.

Chilli sotong: MY FAVE!! There's no fishy smell and taste. It was deliciously sweet and mildly spicy. For those who prefer spicy hot food, feel free to add more chilli available at the make-your-own-noodles counter.

Sweet & Sour pork: Skip this! Really. It was rather soggy and almost tasteless. The coating was badly done. It was floury when I chew the cubes of meat... which reminds me, the cubes of meat were soooo small.

Sambal fish fillet: What happened to the hotness and spiciness of this dish? Furthermore, the texture of the fish fillets suggested overcooking. *cries*

For those who can't do a meal without soup, here goes:

Cream of Pumpkin: was not creamy enough BUT I preferred that it was not that creamy.. Hahaaa.. which fits the occasion of buffets. Imagine gulping down a bowl of heavy creamy soup, anyone would be quite full already.

Bak Kut Teh: either they placed the tag wrongly or they brought out a half-done soup. There was no peppery taste, the distinctive feature of bak kut teh!

My first few plates:

I love to start with some salad and appetizers.

The staff was going around the tables, asking customers if they would like to try the popiah. Well, it was not fantastic but not too bad either. Just that there was not enough peanut and sweet sauce to my liking.

The start of my carnivorous adventure~~

Needless for me to say, you can see from the photo, the satay was moist and nicely done. It was almost effortless to bite off the meat from the stick. The sauce was very nutty and close to authentic Malay-style satay sauce. Let me reiterate, "close to".

Pardon my lack of skills in making a good prawn noodles, as you can see, my prawn noodles has more prawns and fishcake than noodles. Hahaha..
One thing weird was that the prawn soup was spicy! Really, I didn't add any chilli to my prawn noodles but it was spicy enough for me to take sips of water.

Durian Pengat is not the regular durian pengat. It was more like creamy durian paste with sago. The durian taste and smell were not distinctive at all!! Though it fell short of my expectations, it was not too bad.

Everything on this plate were gooooooooood! Gosh, if only I had more space to stomach more food, I would have taken another two servings of all the cakes and puffs!

(What's not photographed: Teh tarik, bandung, soy bean milk, ice cream, red bean soup, nyonya kuehs, curry, stir-fry veggies and char kway teow)

What I liked:
- The ambience was kinda relaxing. The swimming pool was right outside and you could see the Changi golf course. I felt like I was away from the city (which I really was) and time just slows down.

- The attentive and friendly staff were prompt in refilling my glasses and clearing my table. Good job!

- The chefs kept the buffet counters very clean! Also, some of the chefs were very very friendly and willingly to chat with customers. That's nice~

Flaws:
- When I collected food at the outdoor area, I was holding my plate of satay in one hand and a cup of teh tarik in another. Then I realised, I had to pull open the door. NOT PUSH! If only it could be pushed, I could do it with my hands full. Fortunately, there was a nice lady who opened the door for me.

- Travelling all the way to Changi Village could be a hassle for some. It took me more than an hour to get there on public transport.

- No sashimi! I was pretty disappointed because even some cheaper buffet restaurants offer salmon sashimi. However, I admit I'm being biased here.

Verdict:
Overall, I thought that the buffet spread substantiates its affordable hotel buffet price. The quality of the food was quite decent in general. It's a buffet place recommended for family and especially for those with elderly members in their family.

Irodori Japanese Restaurant

Finally, under the recommendation of my buffet-kakis, I had ala carte buffet lunch at Irodori, Riverview Hotel..

Important note: Must make reservation!
Due to the mid-size capacity and its restaurant's popularity.. it was full when I was there on a Saturday..

first up! the signature Green Tea Tofu is a complimentary dish.. it'll be on your table when u arrive.. with no surprise, the silken tofu was smooth in texture and the green tea taste was refreshing.. it cleanses your taste buds before your binge! great first dish..

next up was also a complimentary dish.. not sure what's the name of the dish so I shall name it - Steamed Salmon.. it was seasoned to perfection and the taste was just right! the saltiness of soy sauce and the natural sweetness of the salmon just balances out.. I can gobble down a bowl of rice with this..

Why Ebi Mentai Mayo was a complimentary dish?!?!?! How I wish I could order 10 of this delicious prawn! trust me.. it was that good..

Final complimentary dish which I do not know the name of.. Let's just call it Fried Salmon with Ikura Mayo.. The mayo was good to go with any fried items.. I rather they separate the mayo from the fried salmon coz a few of them were so drenched in it that it became soggy.. taste wise was pretty average..

I was still okay with the standard of the food up till now when only complimentary dishes were served.. subsequently, my horrible food journey began.. (with a few good moments here and there)..

Salmon Steak was a huge shock for me.. It tasted okay.. but the two pieces of salmon was really miserably small.. real small.. not that I would expect a huge piece of salmon coz it was ala carte buffet so small portion would make space for other stuff.. I totally understand that theory.. but the two pieces (close to slices) of salmon were so thin and dry inside and oily outside.. oh gosh..

Saba was another average dish.. *yawns*

Pork Roll with Golden Mushroom woke me up.. the pork was tasty and I finished 4 pieces by myself.. heehee..

I thought Beef Roll with Golden Mushroom would be as nice.. BUT! it was not even half as nice as the pork version.. the beef was like chewing gum.. hahahahaaa.. I spat out the ever-chewable tendons.. not ordering this ever~

Why can't I find a decent Chawanmushi at a buffet? this is so disappointing.. yes it has all the basic ingredients like naruto maki fish cake, chicken chunk, etc.. it does not have the taste of a good dashi stock.. *sobs*

Ebi Tempura was FANTASTIC! I ordered this twice! the prawn was of a good satisfying size.. considering the affordable buffet price.. I think the standard of the tempura was comparable to that of Sushi Tei.. :D

Tea Pot Soup was another FANTASTIC dish.. it was soup served in a tea pot.. I'm not sure what ingredients was added.. but I saw mushrooms in the tea pot.. the soup made me feel better after that awful chawanmushi experience.. (^o^)

I ordered Mixed Sashimi to see if their sashimi was fresh in general.. sad to say, only salmon and swordfish can make it.. the rest of them such as tuna, snapper and octopus, were just not very good..

Irodori Maki consists of lobster salad.. it was so good that I had two plates of this to myself.. but the generous amount of mayonnaise was too much for me..

Torikaraage (Fried Chicken) was totally a deja vu! two small chunks of chicken.. LOL lor.. really.. it was tasty alright but I was so speechless by the portion that I did not order again.. hahaha.. I need to order again everytime I want to eat a piece of fried chicken?! that's a joke.. I'm not expecting big portion of it but a reasonable portion.. I'm sure they can give 5 to 6 pieces in a plate for two persons right??

Salmon Sashimi came when I was about to stand up and leave.. I ordered this at 12.15pm.. this plate came at 1.45pm.. no doubt it was nice and I finished it anyway..

Did anyone realised that I ordered too little for an ala carte buffet??

YES! I still had the space to accommodate that last plate of salmon sashimi.. because I was not full after spending more than 2 hours in a buffet restaurant.. it was the first time I stepped out of a buffet restaurant and could still think of what to eat next..

for $35++.. the variety they offer is more than reasonable.. and like all restaurants.. there would be hits and misses.. but Irodori fared badly in portion and waiting time.. I ordered many dishes and I had to wait ALL THE TIME.. as you can see from the photos above, my table was NEVER full.. more than half of the time I was waiting for the dishes to come and for the waitress to attend to me.. not only they were understaffed.. the orders just DO NOT COME.. it was an unsatisfying buffet experience..

the waitress asked for my understanding.. citing that "the orders are jammed up" because many people were ordering.. if it's a new establishment, I can totally understand that excuse.. but it was a Saturday and the restaurant was fully booked (I saw their reservation paper with all the tables marked with customers' names).. I thought that they could have been more prepared..

I couldn't continue sitting there waiting for the dishes which I do not know whether they would come or not.. for instance, the salmon sashimi that came after 1 1/2 hours.. I don't think I need to spell it out how ridiculous it was..

I do not think I will be back for second visit.. it was just nightmare.. after this unsatisfying buffet.. I'm soooo looking forward to going for another one to quench my thirst for fresh sashimi, good Japanese food and great buffet spread at a decent and responsible buffet restaurant..

River Palace Chinese Restaurant

It was my first visit to River Palace but this ala carte restaurant was worth a visit. At the price of $35.80++ for a buffet lunch, River Palace offers a decent spread of dishes and you can have the dishes served to you in approx 10 minutes after you had ordered them.

When I first stepped into the restaurant, I was a little worried. Why? Firstly, it was not crowded. Only approx 1/3 of the restaurant was occupied. And what comes to mind?

BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT! Not until I started my starters.. hold your mark and get set to.. GO~~~

While waiting for my one-time-served dishes, I had a serving of Herbal Chicken Soup that was along their feel-free-to-take dessert table.. it has rich herbal taste but NO bitter taste.. instead, it was like those sweet and fragrant Cantonese soup that I like.. though the only down side was that there was no chicken meat in the soup.. -_-

Next...

First up, Braised Shark's Fin Soup with Crabmeat is served to make you feel full after drinking the super-duper starchy soup. So, I skipped the soup and just attack the crab meat and the minimal shark's fin with a sip of soup here and there. The soup tasted not bad though~

Sliced Duck with Crispy Beancurd Skin wrapped in Egg Pancake was reaaaally good. The sliced duck is fragrant and the juicy meat mixed with the plum sauce wrapped in the thin egg pancake were so perfect in a bite! just when I started biting it, the crunchiness of the cucumber and crisp of the beancurd skin climaxed the whole dish.. why this dish comes only once?!

When Sautéed Fresh Scallops with Asparagus and Pine Nuts came, I was sooo happy. Because I am the only one who eats scallops! wahahahaaa... four words could sum up my satisfaction of the dish - very fresh, very tasty.. *happy~*

Blanched Prawns in Shao Shing Wine was passable.. the prawns were fresh and big but there were no sweetness and no fragrance of the shao shing.. -_-||| what a disappointment.. they wasted the fresh big prawns..

Now let's continue to the unlimited order of foooooooooo~~~d

Deep-fried Shredded Duck in Yam: I couldn't see nor taste the duck.. but it was a nice fried yam dish..

Wok-fried Crab in Black Pepper Sauce: it was served to my table by mistake.. I didn't order any of their crab dishes because it was such a hassle and time-consuming to eat it.. it looks good though! smelt really nice too.. recommended for crab-lovers.. :D

Salmon Sashimi: Who knew?! the salmon sashimi was really fresh and they were in thick slices.. for wasabi-lovers like me.. rest assured that they provide ample amount of wasabi and shoyu.. hahaha.. I had four plates of these~ :D

Fried Vermicelli with Salted Fish: Most buffet-goers would skip carbo dishes.. but Chinese would always have carbo dishes.. why give it a miss? EAT CARBO!

Stewed Pork Belly served with Steamed Bun: the ratio of lean meat to fats was 7:3.. the pork belly they served was more lean than most Chinese restaurant out there (6:4).. the gravy was so nice that my sister dipped the bun.. The steamed bum was fluffy and served hot!

Steamed Sea Bass with Plum and Tomato: the fish was average.. it was not as fresh as those served at seafood restaurants like Tung Lok and Jumbo.. but at $35.80++ buffet lunch, we have to be realistic with our expectations right?

MUST-EAT!! Wok-fried Prawns with Salted Eggs: I ordered this repeatedly.. it was so nice.. you can eat it with the shell if you want! the shell had been fried to crisp and yet not soften by the savoury salted egg.. too good~~ oh! there's no camera tricks here.. it was a camera phone.. hahaha.. so yes.. the prawns were big!

Sautéed Beef Steak in Barbecue Sauce: passable.. there was no sweetness of the beef.. the sauce was not fragrant at all.. I wondered what taste I should be expecting..

Deep-fried Chicken Wing with Shrimp Paste: very crispy but the shrimp paste was so weak!

Chocolate and Strawberry cakes: some people say that the cakes were not good.. I agree.. but it's a Chinese restaurant! it would be so ironic if they have delicious cakes! nonetheless, I thought that their strawberry cake was okay.. I had two! :D there were many uncles who complimented their Cream of Almond when I was there.. telling me "must try must try"..

Mango pudding: this was good! it was not too sweet and the milk complimented the mango pudding just right.. My mom and I had second serving.. they were snatched away as soon as they serve this at the dessert table..

(I missed taking shots of Stir-fried Sliced Venison with Spring Onion and Ginger and Smoked Boneless Chicken with “Po Lei” Tea Leaves.)
