Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King Four Seasons

Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King Four Seasons is the much-talked-about ramen restaurant for the past couple of months since its opening on 10 May. With queues lining outside its store like other three Keisuke ramen restaurants.. I wondered if the ramen served by Ramen Champion Keisuke Takeda was really that good..

Why visit Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King Four Seasons at Bugis Village?
Champions really think differently.. Singapore has many chain ramen restaurants.. But Keisuke Takeda's ramen outlets each has different concept.. Millenia Walk outlet serves ramen in crab broth while Amara Hotel outlet serves ramen in chicken broth.. The outlet at Orchid Hotel serves ramen in pork broth.. just like this outlet at Bugis Village but this outlet markets beautifies its ramen into Four Seasons (春夏秋冬) - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, and plus a King version ramen.. Aren't you tempted yet?

First of all, where is the restaurant at Bugis Village?
If you are facing the entrance of KFC, walk down to the right side. If you are facing the entrance of McDonald's, walk down to the left side. The ramen restaurant, with its glamorous exterior, is hard to miss. (^O^)

What if there's a queue?
Just queue! Hahahaa.. No worries, there are free and more than enough barley tea to go around.. However, the trick to avoid queuing is to visit during off-peak hours.. I didn't queue and my orders came in less than 5 minutes on a Saturday because I visited at about 5pm..

How to order?
You will be given this order sheet and a pen when seated.

FYI: The order sheet is also available in Japanese! It's just on the other side of the same order sheet..

The order sheet is quite straight-forward.. Just check the box of your choice!

Spring Ramen: Basil and Parmesan Cheese
Recommended for food adventurers and people who loves cheese!

Summer Ramen: Spicy Minced Pork
It's SPICCCCCY! Not only it is spicy (hot), it is full of spice (Japanese shichimi, Szechuan pepper and Cayenne pepper)! Recommended for peppery and spicy-hot lovers~~

Autumn Ramen: Minced Pork with Bonito Flavour and Fried Mixed Mushrooms
Clearly.. It is so obvious that mushroom lovers must order this!

Winter Ramen: Pork Broth Ramen
This is the safest or in other words, non-adventurous choice. Recommended for people who prefers something simple and nice and with no surprise.. But also, at the same time, the best choice to assess the tastiness of its ramen..

King Ramen: Stir-fried Pork with Ginger on Top
What to say? The name says it all.. IT'S THE KING! Recommended for all.. (^O^)

(In the center) After making your order, sign up for the mobile membership, simply by scanning the QR code or through its website and you can enjoy 7% off!

(On the left) "替玉" (Japanese: kaedama): In a ramen restaurant, kaedama means extra noodles. The extra noodles comes when you are almost finished or have finished your bowl of ramen.. Please note that it does not mean that a bigger bowl of ramen is served to you.. (^______^)

(On the right) Japanese Rice: It is not uncommon to have rice with ramen.. Because the broth is thick and tasty.. not to forget that it would be extra saltier after all the flavour of pork (chasyu) and egg were being added in.. You can pour the rice into the leftover soup after you had finished your noodles.. うまい!! (yummy in Japanese)

Such a considerate restaurant! If you are scared that you would be in a mess while slurping your ramen.. You can ask for paper apron to protect your clothes and rubber band to tie your hair! Or if you want to cosplay as Keisuke! Hahaha..

You will be served with a tub of fried beansprouts and a bowl of hard-boiled eggs.. FOR YOUR FREE CONSUMPTION!

Gentle note: Please be considerate and hygienic!

Take only how much you can eat with the small tongs in the tub of beansprouts.. You can place them on the small dish plates provided.. I'm adding this note as I saw the person next to me eating directly from the tub with his chopsticks!

For the eggs.. Although it's freeeee, don't overstuffed yourself and try to finish the whole basket of eggs.. Remember to mind your cholesterol~~ There was another person at another table finishing all the eggs.. I wondered if she still had stomach space for her ramen..

Are you a hands-on person? Start grinding the sesame while waiting for your ramen! Adding some would add flavour to your ramen~~

Winter Ramen with Flavoured Egg ($12.90): Less means more.. not in a fashion sense but similar.. This simple ramen has no distractions.. You can enjoy (assess) the tastiness of the thick pork broth that was boiled for 11 hours.. Some, or should I say many, Singaporeans may find the broth "jelat" halfway through finishing your ramen.. If you are a true blue ramen-lover, you will know how to appreciate and might love this thick thick thick broth..

King Ramen with Flavoured Egg ($15.90): おいしい~~ (delicious in Japanese) The thinly sliced stir-fried pork contains a little fat.. Hence, it was soft and easy to chew.. The onions enhances the sweetness of the pork.. I like the black fungus.. Because there were so much of saltiness going on.. The black fungus really helped to tone down the feeling of overconsumption of sodium, psychologically.. Haha.. OH OH!! Important: The flavoured egg was soooo nicely done!! So soft and tasty!

Eating the noodles with the strong and thick (salty) broth, and savoury stir-fried pork.. Oooh~~~ No wonder it is called The KING..

LOVE: I like that it allows me to choose how I want my soup to be, what noodle texture and the amount of oil to add.. And thankfully, my ramen turned out how I wanted it to be..

The menu and way of ordering was very simple and direct.. I saw an old and sweet uncle-auntie couple discussing and ordering their ramen.. Though they needed a little help.. They understood with minimal explanation from the staff..

I also like the take-yourself and do-it-yourself concept.. which is very common in the eateries in Japan.. (^O^)

Ambience: I like the interior decor.. Different areas are decorated in different seasons.. It fits the name of the restaurant! Though the seats were kinda close to one another.. It was not as cramped as I thought it would be.. I think some eateries in Japan are more "cosy"..

Value: Worth! The price is comparable to some chain ramen restaurants in Singapore yet it is nicer compared to many of those restaurants..

Verdict: I will visit again~~ but maybe in another two weeks or so.. I admit the "Normal" broth (authentic Japanese taste) is really tasty but too much of it can really make me feel uncomfortable.. I'm not Japanese mah.. Let me make a date with Keisuke's ramen in two weeks' time then~~ and I will be choosing "Light" for my soup the next time!

Huber's Deli (The Grandstand)

I've been waiting to try Huber's Deli for more than a month since it's opening at PasarBella @ The Grandstand!

Let's take a look at its menu~~

Not knowing much about what's good and what's not..
The staff recommended Spicy Pork ($7.80)..

Hmmm.. I can't take food that are too spicy
but the staff assured me that it would be just a bit of spiciness..
Hence I went ahead with it..

Pretty box with a delicious naughty message:
You'll probably bite off more than you can chew!

Time to open up the box!

Ta-daaaa~ You can add whatever sauce you like at the counter..
There are BBQ, mustard, chilli and ketchup..

The large amount of sauerkraut and melted cheese toned down the spiciness of pork sausage! Big big love for the sauerkraut! It was nicely done and it went so well with the sausage..

Ambience: Situated within PasarBella.. The environment is pretty already.. There was a crowd but it was not packed.. I considered it vibrant but not a noisy place.. There are many small tables in the eating area around Huber's Deli.. There are also more seats on the 2nd level.. I did not have problems finding an empty table on a Saturday afternoon.. If you are going in a big group.. you can join up the small tables.. People are easy-going there under the dim lightings, feeling relaxed.. Heehee~

Verdict: I don't mind trying other sausages/sandwiches if I'm going back to PasarBella again.. (^O^)

Oceans of Seafood

Oceans of Seafood consists of two restaurants - Japanese Restaurant and International Seafood Restaurant. They are opposite each other..

Japanese Restaurant

International Seafood Restaurant

I chose to sit at the Japanese Restaurant as I was tempted by the setting and ambience..

I was given two menus - the menus of both restaurants: (^O^)

*Please note that there is different menu if you are seated at the International Seafood Restaurant. (^__^)

I have mixed feelings for Salmon Chirashi ($18).

Thumbs up: Visually pleasant aside, the salmon was quite fresh. It was of generous portion and the slices were thick and big.

Small flaw: the rice sticks to the bowl! I found that the rice was a bit dry, thus it gets glued to the bowl. Perfect Japanese rice does not glue to the bowl.

Oceans' Taster ($178) was probably the best seafood platter I had in recent months.. (the ones I had in Japan were probably the best I ever had).. The platter arrived with three sauces - black pepper sauce, butter and garlic sauce. See pics below for a better view of the crab, lobster and king prawns..

The words to describe the humongous crab, fleshy lobster and big prawns are only.. only.. only.. Succulent, Sweet, Satisfied! It's such an "Sss" platter!

I did not dip the sauce for the crab and lobster because it would be such a waste! The seafood were so fresh.. There was no need for the sauce..
Also, because the seafood were so fresh, there was no need to cook it in a complicated way..

I guess the seafood was cooked simply with salt, garlic and butter/oil..

The crab had a strong buttery taste which complements the sweetness of the flesh.. Awwwwwwesomeness max!

The lobster comes off the shell easily.. no hassle.. proves FRESHNESS! Without dipping any sauce, I stuffed half of the lobster meat in one mouthful.. O.M.G.. all my stress from work was relieved in one bite!

I had fun shelling my big prawns because they came off so easily.. I had some of them without dipping any sauce.. They were so springy! hahahaha...

For some prawns, I tried dipping the sauces.. Personally, I thought they did not go well with black pepper because it overpowers the prawn and diminishes the sweetness of the fresh prawns.. Wasted! Some might like the creamy and fragrant butter but I'm not a fan.. I preferred the garlic sauce that brings out or even enhances the sweetness of prawns.. (^O^)

How fresh were the seafood?

The waiter came to me and said: "Fresh right? Like they are alive!"
Hahahahaa...

Ambience: Above average. Suitable for many, including family with children, group gatherings, couples and friends.. There is a crowd but the seats are rather spaced out.. So you will have a personal space to talk to your group/friend(s).. The dim lightings makes me feel comfortable.. I mean everyone is psychologically 1/4 drunk/relaxed under dim lightings..

Hygiene: Though there is a display of raw seafood like a wet market, there was no stench of fishiness and the environment was kept dry and clean.. No worries about slipping and falling on wet floors.. Also, because the place is still new.. so there would be a standard of cleaniness.

Verdict: Second visit? I'm planning to plot a date on my schedule already! I've decided to invest more on the seafood from the International Seafood Restaurant and probably just order sashimi from the Japanese Restaurant. (^O^)

PasarBella

Ever since PasarBella's soft launch on 4th & 5th May, I've been reading up on the place. There were many good reviews about the place and of course, it has been very crowded.. I've been waiting and waiting and after more than a month.. I've found some time to make my way to PasarBella.

Unless you drive, it is not considered an easy accessible place.
Fortunately, there is SHUTTLE BUS!

There are FREE shuttle services that operate daily at designated bus stops:
- Newton MRT (B40181),
- 7 Botanic Gardens MRT (B41021)
- Toa Payoh MRT (B52189)
(View Shuttle Bus Schedule)

(For more information on how to get there with other modes of transport, please visit:
http://www.pasarbella.com/location_and_direction.php)

As it was my first time making my way there, I was pondering how the shuttle bus looks like and if the shuttle bus stops at the pick-up point (taxi stand etc).. Well, it turns out that the bus arrives at the bus stop quite on time! *happy* If you realised, I had to wait in the open space under such hazy conditions..

I boarded the bus at Newton MRT bus stop.. Subsequently, the bus travelled to Botanic Gardens MRT bus stop and arrived at The Grandstand in about 25 minutes.
I acted like a tourist on the shuttle bus.. Looking left and right.. coz I seldom travel to this part of Singapore.. :p

There are many restaurants at The Grandstand.. For more info, visit:
http://thegrandstand.com.sg/store-list.aspx#/cafe

*The above entrance looks different from picture on top? haha.. cos there are different entrances to PasarBella. :D

Walking into PasarBella was like entering a whole new world.. Though it's within The Grandstand but it looks so out of it..
Besides fresh fruits and vegetables, organic groceries, there are many many stores that sell delicious-looking food..
I shall blog about the food temptations in my next post! So stay tuned..

Verdict: It is considered convenient since shuttle services are available and the pick-up points are at three MRT Stations.. I will be back for second visit for the nice environment.. It is not congested like the town area and there are so many food choices for me.. *happy* Most of all.. I enjoy the whole experience of walking and exploring the different stores and eating from store to store.. (^O^)

Seoul Yummy (Square 2)

It's been over a year since I last visited Seoul Yummy.. There seemed to be some changes to their menu..

They now offer "The Ultimate Combo for Two" ($43.90).. There were so many dishes to choose from.. I took quite a while to decide what I wanted..

My choices for the Combo were:
1 side dish (Pork Cutlet)
2 meat/seafood main dish (Hotplate Spicy Chicken; Saba Fish)
1 hotpot soup (Spicy Beef Soup)
1 dessert (Mango Bingsoo)
Two bowls of rice (plain / multi-grain)

Add-on:
Ginseng Chicken Soup ($15.90)
1 plain rice ($1.50)
Roasted Barley Tea ($1.20 per pax)

My bill: $76.35 for 3 pax, which would be about $25 per person.. (^o^)

Now let's eat~~

Pork Cutlet was tougher than I thought.. Far from tasty.. It was dry and bland.. The sesame dipping sauce that came with it helped a lot.. At least I managed to clean the plate! :D

Hotplate Spicy Chicken was of food court standard.. probably the only plus point was that this had more slices and less minced chicken than the ones found in food courts..

Saba Fish was not my dish but I was told that it was not bad! :)

Spicy Beef Soup was yummilicious! The cubes of tofu and glass noodles absorbed the tasty korean-spicy soup.. It was so good that I was slurping away the glass noodles from that hot hot pot of soup, ignoring my multi-grain rice! Although the down point was that there were only two slices of beef.. sad eh.. (-_-)

Note: You can add $6.90 and choose Ginseng Chicken Soup for the combo.. but because I wanted to try the Spicy Beef Soup so I ordered Ginseng Chicken Soup as ala carte.

Ginseng Chicken Soup has always been the must-have of this restaurant.. Compared to a year ago.. I think that the soup tasted a little different.. The taste of the ginseng was stronger and the broth was thinner.. Depending on individual's preference.. I preferred the soup I had a year ago but some might prefer the new taste that is more herbal..

For those who had not visited Seoul Yummy before: Like most Korean restaurants, they will serve the Korean side dishes.. About 6-8 small bowls of side dishes would be served.. They change their variety of side dishes from day to day.. There are kimchi, cold spicy tofu, sauteed peanuts, ikan bilis, potato salad, bean sprouts and etc..

My all-time-favorite is: Cold Spicy Tofu!

Mango Bingsoo was a terrific dessert to end the meal.. After all the flavorful dishes.. high salt content, hotness and spiciness.. I needed something sweet, sour and cold! The slightly sourish soft serve yogurt and sweet mango syrup did the magic.. mix it with some crushed ice with syrup and eat with the jellies! so satisfying~~ then pamper yourself with a slice of mango.. heavenly!

Food: There are many mixed reviews on Seoul Yummy online.. hmmmm.. Personally, I think that Seoul Yummy offers affordable Korean food of satisfying standard.. after all, it's a mid-range cost restaurant.. so my expectations are not as high.. If I want to have really really authentic and good Korean food, I would go to an atas (Malay for high class) Korean restaurant or perhaps fly to Korea!

Service: The waiters are very friendly and prompt.. THEY SMILE!! though I thought that they were kind of understaffed on a Saturday.. I was attended to every time I seek for more side dishes..

Hygiene: They clean the tables with disinfectant spray and I could see the waitress cleaning the utensils diligently..

Ambience: There are two sides to the restaurants.. a dark side and a bright side.. hahahaha.. Actually, the restaurant occupies two units, separated by a walking aisle.. if you prefer to dine under dim lights (for couples!), go left! if you prefer to dine in a bright environment (for family and gathering), go right!

Verdict: I will definitely go back again! Seoul Yummy is one of the most easily accessible Korean food chain restaurants in Singapore.. Besides all-you-can-order side dishes and refillable roasted barley tea, the food is acceptable and the price is affordable.. I want to eat Army Stew next time!

Hifumi Japanese Restaurant

"Welcome to Hifumi Japanese Restaurant!"
... was what I wanted to hear but instead it was..

"How many?"
"You can only eat for 90 minutes, you okay?"

Hifumi is a wallet-friendly Japanese Restaurants that offers all-you-can-eat appetizer bar when you order any of their set menu.. (kinda reminds me of Ponderosa and Sizzler which have ceased their operations in Singapore..)

Also, you can just pay an additional $2 for free flow of drinks that ranges from soft drinks such as Gingle Ale and Mirinda, to hot beverages such as Mocha, Latte and Green Tea. (See more in the menu below.)

First.. Let's go through the menu, shall we?

(Note: Click on image to enlarge)

(Note: This menu is from Hifumi's Facebook. However, it is not up to date. The prices had increased slightly when I visited on 9 June 2013.)

Itadakimasu! Let's eat!

Salmon Oyako-jyu Set ($17.99) was pleasant visually.. the generous portion of salmon and salmon roe had totally covered the box of rice.. I took the first mouthful without any wasabi and soy sauce to find that.. (-_-) the salmon was of room temperature.. the rice does not taste like what I usually have in Japanese restaurants..

by right, the chilled raw salmon should be taken out for cut when they prepare the dish.. hence, if the salmon was of room temperature.. either they did not chill the raw salmon or they had prepared the dish beforehand and served it up when someone ordered it.. it was the first time I ate my favorite salmon so slowly..

Saba Shioyaki Set ($12.99) looked good.. apologies for not having any comments on how it tastes cos' I'm not a fan of saba..

The appetizer bar was definitely more star-worthy than the main sets.. Takoyaki and Onion Steak were the latest items introduced about 5 weeks ago.. I don't eat onions so you won't see that on my plate..

Takoyaki (center) was passable.. alternative meaning that you can really pass on it..

I really wanted to tabao (take away) Sweet Potato Fries (left) soooo much.. It was fried to crisp and then stirred in sugar syrup and glazed with brown sugar powder.. This dish was super powerful! I could snack on this for 90 minutes..

Rice Cracker (right) was to be eaten with vegetable gravy.. but the vegetable gravy is not in the picture.. the gravy was cooked with onions, cabbage and carrots.. thickened with starch.. good to have with a bowl of rice.. (^o^)

Vegetable with Cheese Fondue (back) has vegetables such as broccoli and potatoes.. as you can see from the picture above.. I took potatoes only.. hahaha.. I'm not an "avid" vegetable lover.. but as all of us know.. anything with cheese just won't go wrong (most of the time)..

Chawanmushi was nicely done.. to the extent that it surprised me a little.. the silken egg was soft and smooth.. it was so nice that I had 3 of this! besides a cube of mushroom and crabstick.. there was..

a SHRIMP!

My number one dish: Pumpkin with Walnut Salad.. This was super delicious! The mayonnaise / salad sauce was not too creamy and thick.. so it was just nice.. This was another dish that I want to tabao too!!

Soba with Sesame dipping sauce was a pretty generous dish to have on an appetiser bar.. especially if it's all-you-can-eat.. this was not mine but I heard that it was refreshing and nice.. and of course filling too..

Radish with Minced Chicken tasted healthy.. hahahahaa.. in other words, bland.. like hospital food.. gosh..

While rubbing the full full tummy, finish the meal with something sweet like Fruit Cocktail!

Service: BAD! No greetings, no smiles, no courtesy.. The first Japanese restaurant that does not say "Irasshaimase" (Welcome/Please come in).. When I went to pay.. the staff did not talk to me at all.. she was talking to the waiter.. pointed at the amount I had to pay and put her hand out, asking for my payment.. after I handed her my credit card, she left! and asked the other staff to print out the receipt for my signature.. Omg..

Ambience: Spacious.. which was really an important point because there were a lot of space for you to move around to get your food and drinks!

Hygiene: FAIL BIG TIME! They do not use disinfectant spray to wipe the table.. I saw the waiter wiped the table with a cloth and swept the bits of food to the floor and some flew onto the chair.. he did not bother to clean the chair.. it was like that when I was there watching him clearing the tables..

Verdict: Though the service was bad, the hygiene was not up to standard.. I will be back for second visit! because I only spent about $20 per pax and I felt like I had eaten an ala-carte buffet.. Worth it!

Fukuichi Japanese Dining

Couple of months ago, Fukuichi Japanese Dining came in 3rd in The Best 5 Japanese Restaurants in Singapore highlighted by The Best Singapore (article).

For more background info and highlights about the restaurant, please visit: http://www.thebestsingapore.com/best-place/fukuichi-japanese-dining/

Fukuichi offers food that are above average in taste, quality and price as well. My total bill (including $2 for green tea) came up to $121.25 for 5 ala-carte items for two pax.

Now let's feast!

Ebi Almond Tempura / Deep Fried Prawn with Almond Crumbs ($22) was a surprise at sight because it is not a common dish in japanese restaurants in Singapore. The dish was very well done. The almond flakes were fried to crisp and the flakes did not fall off when I picked the prawn up. Taste wise, it was nice BUT I thought that there were too much almond flakes. It overpowered the prawn in quantity. I felt that I had eaten more almond flakes than prawn which was kinda disappointing. If the flakes were crushed to slightly smaller bits (crumbs) and instead of covering the whole prawn, maybe glazed on one side of the prawn would be good. (^O^) Nonetheless, the sweetness and freshness of the prawn were not diminished one bit.

Shake Aburi Maki / Seared Salmon Roll ($22) was AWESOME! the salmon was super fresh! (you can read up on how fresh Fukuichi's fishes are from the links in my intro) When I was eating this, there was no need add anything else.. no need to dip shoyu or add wasabi.. it was that good!

Kani Karaage / Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab ($10) was good.. unfortunately, I'm not a fan so I don't really know how to appreciate this.. The sauce that came along was slightly sour.. It takes off the oily taste of the dish and tantalizes your taste buds a bit.. On another hand, it was also delicious to eat without the sauce as well.. Even after left on the table for a while.. eating it cold was still as crispy.. that's the power of good japanese batter and frying skills!

I'm sure many are familiar with somen (cold noodles) but what about gyomen (fish noodles)?

Hiyashi Gyomen / Cold Fish Noodles ($12) is the first fish noodles I've tried. It was very very very good. There was no fishy stench so not to worry. The texture is slightly tougher than somen.. imagine eating slightly softer version of fishcake that it made into noodles.. it should be that kind of texture..

How to eat?
Add some scallion and myoga (Japanese ginger) into the tsuyu (dipping sauce).. take a mouthful of the gyomen into the dipping sauce.. slurp it up!
Note: Personal preference but my personal opinion would be - be easy on the ginger.. do not put all the ginger into the dipping sauce.. a bit will do.. (^o^)

One sad point was the portion. I wished there were more.. *drools*

Gyuniku Fagura Sauce / Grilled Beef with Foie Gras Sauce ($35) was another AWESOME dish.. The sauce was good to the extent that it was wiped clean! The beef cubes were medium well done and tenderized.. Every mouthful and every bite was so satisfying.. I just let out "hmmmm" every cube I ate.. Really!

Service: The waitresses were prompt in clearing the plates when we finished them. They were also attentive so not to worry if you can't get their attention like some restaurants.

Waiting time: After ordering, the first dish (Ebi Almond Tempura) came in 3 minutes! Subsequently, the dishes came one by one in two to three minutes.. that's fast! For hot items, they came real hot! hahaha..

Ambience: The restaurant is spacious and not cramped like some Japanese restaurants. The setting is recommendable for group gathering, family and couples too..

Verdict: I'll be back! (in terminator's voice) to conquer other dishes!!! hahahahaaa~~
